Com a f\u00e1brica de carros Gurgel sendo lacrada na cidade de Rio Claro, no interior de S\u00e3o Paulo, naquele momento terminava a jornada da primeira e \u00fanica fabricante nacional de autom\u00f3veis do Brasil. Por decis\u00e3o judicial, naquele dia foi <u><b>decretada a fal\u00eancia da Gurgel<\/b><\/u>, empresa idealizada, criada e administrada pelo engenheiro e empres\u00e1rio Jo\u00e3o Augusto Conrado do Amaral Gurgel [26\/3\/1926 &#8211; 30\/1\/2009].<\/p>\n<p>Desde a d\u00e9cada de 1960, Gurgel fabricava carros em pequena escala, sempre os batizando com nomes bem brasileiros e montando-os com motor Volkswagen. Na d\u00e9cada seguinte foi pioneiro na fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de <u><b>carros el\u00e9tricos<\/b><\/u>, expandiu a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de ve\u00edculos com motores \u00e0 combust\u00e3o e, <u><b>ganhando grande escala com novos modelos<\/b><\/u>, nos anos 80 os simp\u00e1ticos carros de sua montadora, agora uma <u><b>empresa de capital aberto<\/b><\/u>, j\u00e1 faziam parte do tr\u00e2nsito das cidades e estradas.<\/p>\n<p>Mas na d\u00e9cada de 1990, as vendas n\u00e3o corresponderam aos enormes custos de uma linha de produ\u00e7\u00e3o em s\u00e9rie. Erros administrativos, endividamento, atraso de sal\u00e1rios, greves e demiss\u00f5es levaram \u00e0 concordata e, depois, \u00e0 fal\u00eancia. Ao longo de 25 anos, a Gurgel produziu 40 mil ve\u00edculos.<\/p>\n<p>Ironicamente, a fal\u00eancia em 1994 viria justamente no momento em que havia uma pol\u00edtica de incentivo governamental aos carros populares. No dia da fal\u00eancia, Jo\u00e3o Augusto Conrado do Amaral Gurgel estava em Bras\u00edlia tentando, sem sucesso, negociar algum tipo de ajuda governamental para o endividamento.<\/p>\n<p>Na semana seguinte \u00e0 fal\u00eancia, a reportagem especial \u201cA saga Gurgel\u201d, do rep\u00f3rter Celso Zucatelli, no Jornal do Carro, terminava assim:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cJo\u00e3o Augusto Conrado do Amaral Gurgel conta que, em 1949, ao concluir o curso de engenharia mec\u00e2nica na USP, apresentou um trabalho que lhe deu problemas &#8211; ao inv\u00e9s de um guindaste, pedido pelo professor, mostrou a id\u00e9ia de um carro popular. Isto lhe custou uma reprimenda, com o mestre dizendo que \u201ccarro \u00e9 coisa para multinacional\u201d.
